The ceremony includes performances by local songstress Kennedy Taylor and Cara McDermott, principal trumpet of the Milton High School Band, the reading of a Memorial Day Essay by Hopewell Middle School student Madison Landis, and featured speaker Col. Murphy Neal Jones, who spent nearly seven years in a Hanoi, Vietnam prisoner of war camp and continued his military service after being released. The ceremony will conclude with a roll call of local living and fallen veterans, punctuated by a military aircraft flyover at 11 a.m.

Before another needle falls off the live Christmas tree, remove those ornaments and take the tree to one of many locations throughout Forsyth County for a recycling and mulching event. Free tree seedlings and vegetable seeds will be available January 8th (while supplies last) at several drop off locations.  
Residents of Forsyth County have made it a tradition to end the holiday season by recycling their Christmas trees during the “Bring One for the Chipper” annual event, sponsored by Keep Forsyth County Beautiful. A wood chipper then processes the recycled trees into mulch. “The number of Christmas trees recycled in Forsyth County grows every year, which is encouraging,” said Tammy Wright, the county’s environmental program manager. “Recycling the trees is good for the environment and provides mulch to cover walking trails as well as help the ground around plants retain moisture.”  Forsyth County residents have participated in Bring One for the Chipper since 1994 and have recycled more than 67,000 trees during that time.
